A Girl, A Dog & A Promise
The chain, and the promise.
When Bin was twelve, her grandfather brought home a small dog named Lily. For a while, her grandmother, who did not like pets, took charge of the walks, and decided what Lily would be walked on.
A small dog is born
Lily, the brightest spark in a twelve-year-old’s life.
She comes home
In a cardboard box, small enough to fit in one hand. By dinner the whole house had rearranged itself around her.
The chain
Her grandmother used an old iron chain for walks, too heavy for a body that small. Bin was twelve: no money, no way to buy a leash, and no adult who would listen. She once tied a soft scarf around Lily’s collar instead. It was gone by the next walk. All she could say was, “Wait a little longer, Lily.”
She does not wait
Lily fell ill and passed away before the promise could be kept. The sound of that chain stayed.
